We invite you to watch the experimental documentary film Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, by independent filmmaker Nina Menkes, in which the director analyses the male gaze in the history of cinema, from silent films to the present day.<\/p>\n

The documentary, which reflects on and denounces the sexualisation of women in film and the possible consequences this has on the collective imagination and society as a whole, arose from a master class Menkes delivered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 entitled “Sex and Power: The Visual Language of Oppression”.<\/p>\n

Lighting, music or the choice of shots, among others, are political decisions that mostly contribute to fostering inequality and positioning women as objects and never as active subjects of stories, perpetuating hegemonic stereotypes and a single model of representation. Through this master class, Menkes offers us tools to locate them and try to re-educate our way of looking at things.<\/p>\n
