In Georgia, Alexander, a trans man, is forced to live clandestinely. With no way to change the gender on his passport, he is denied access to a proper job and medical care. With candor and empathy, director Yana Ugrekhelidze follows Alexander and his doting partner Marie as they consider seeking asylum in another country—a drastic step that they financed when Marie becomes a surrogate mother. In its quietly powerful and deeply humane way, Instructions for Survival captures both the heartbreak and profound joy of ordinary love in extraordinary circumstances.

Two parallel stories of courage, empowerment and affirmation. A powerful and intimate immersion into the invisible everyday lives of many transgender people and their partners.
